By Aaron Humes: Police detained and charged three individuals following the seizure of 49 pounds of suspected cannabis during a routine checkpoint on Monday night, October 20.
Two women, identified as 21-year-old Whitney Doris Alford from Unitedville, Cayo District, and 31-year-old Lisa Marie Gonzalez, residing on Cristo Rey Road in Santa Elena Town, Cayo District, were detained at the scene. 23-year-old Francisco Ernesto Landaverde of San Ignacio later voluntarily surrendered to police.
All three individuals have been charged with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, as investigations continue into the origins of the drugs and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officers from the Mobile Interdiction Unit and Highway Interdiction Team were stationed at a checkpoint along the highway when a silver Ford Escape caught their attention. Upon signaling the vehicle to stop for a search, the driver accelerated away, prompting a swift police pursuit. The officers managed to intercept the vehicle shortly thereafter, but two male occupants fled the scene on foot.
Subsequent searches of the vehicle led authorities to uncover multiple parcels containing the suspected cannabis.
