By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Trinidad & Tobago’s Teniel Campbell delivered a commanding performance to win the Caribbean Elite Women’s Road Championship, outpacing Bermuda’s Gabriela Arnold and Cuba’s Evelyn Díaz Matos in a dramatic final stretch on a 108-kilometer road race through Belize City and its outskirts.

The championship road race, held on Sunday, October 12, started at 8:00 am in front of MIRAB Furniture Gallery on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City. Riders faced a challenging course that looped through Ladyville, the Philip Goldson International Airport Road and the John Smith Road, passing through Western Paradise at Mile 8 onto the George Price Highway before entering the Hattieville Boom Road. The circuit then reconnected with the Philip Goldson Highway, completing the loop at the Airport Junction. Women completed two laps of the 54-kilometer circuit, totaling 108 kilometers (67.1 miles), before returning to finish in front of MIRAB.

Campbell, Arnold, and Jamaica’s Lori Sharpe had set the tone early, sweeping the top three spots in Saturday’s Individual Time Trial (ITT). Their dominance carried into Sunday’s road race, where the trio established a breakaway that defined the front of the race.

Guadeloupe’s Bérénice Paul made a bold move from the chase group with 28 miles to go, attacking at just after 10:00 am and carving out a gap of 1:26. But the front group remained composed—until defending champion Lori Sharpe began to fade. By 10:41, Sharpe had dropped 27 seconds behind, with Paul trailing further at 1:33.

With about 12 miles remaining, Campbell and Arnold surged ahead, dropping Díaz Matos on the final stretch.

Campbell admitted the heat was a challenge.

“It was humid all day, and I don’t do well in heat. I had to pace myself. I wanted to go earlier, but I waited until about 10 kilometers to go. When I attacked again, I felt my legs coming back. Cuba was chasing hard, but I could see she was cooked,” she said on the Cycling Federation of Belize’s live stream after the race.

Campbell said she had been watching for signs of fatigue in her rivals and knew the new Haulover Bridge would be the moment to commit.

As the riders climbed the bridge—a couple miles from the finish—Campbell launched a powerful acceleration that sealed her victory. Her decisive move came on the bridge climb.

“I knew the bump in the middle was the hardest part. I sat there, then hit the top with speed. Once I saw I was extending the gap, I just pushed through before my legs locked,” she said

She credited her support team, family, and country for backing her through the championship. “We wanted to make it count,” she added. “It wasn’t just about me — it was about showing what we’re capable of.”

Campbell’s win marks a significant achievement for Trinidad & Tobago cycling, reaffirming her status as one of the Caribbean’s elite riders.
