By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The conclusion of the 28th annual Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge on Monday, March 10, marked yet another successful year for one of Belize’s premier sporting events. This four-day canoe race, which celebrates the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Belize, holds special significance for Bong Harrison, the son of Orlando Harrison, one of the event’s pioneers.
Reflecting on the origins of this annual tradition, Bong Harrison shared a tribute to his father, Orlando, and his uncle, Richard Harrison, who, he said, together envisioned the race back in 1998. Their dream was to create an event that would promote the natural beauty of Belize and its healthy products while fostering a sense of community and family among Belizeans.
“In 1998, brothers – Richard and Orlando Harrison dreamed of an idea to promote the natural beauty of Belize and our healthy products, with potential for attracting international interest,” Bong said.
“We have now concluded the 28th annual La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge, and it continues to be one of Belize’s premiere events.”
Bong expressed immense gratitude on behalf of the Harrison family to all those who have supported the event over the years.
“THANK YOU for keeping the tradition alive and for passing it on from generation to generation,” he stated.
“What was once a dream became a local staple thanks to your support and love.”
He also acknowledged the vital role of sponsors in the event’s success, specifically mentioning Belikin.
“We thank Belikin and all sponsors who make this event possible each year, and we look forward to your collaborative efforts in making La Ruta Maya bigger and better for all Belizeans,” Bong said.
In closing, Bong reaffirmed the Harrison family’s commitment to the principles upon which the race was founded.
“The Harrison family is fully committed to La Ruta Maya and the three pillars upon which it was built. We recognize that there is much work to be done, and we pledge responsible stewardship to this most prestigious event that the Harrison brothers built with their community and people at heart. Long live La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge!” he concluded.
