By Breaking Belize News Staff: A trial date has been set for 25-year-old Lyson James Cacho, who is accused of the 2023 murder of Jordan Waight.

Cacho, who has been on remand at the Belize Central Prison awaiting trial, learned on Monday at the conclusion of his final Case Management Conference (CMC) in the High Court that his murder trial will commence on April 13, 2026. The matter will be heard before Justice Candace Nanton in a trial by judge without jury.

Cacho is being represented by Attorney Ian Gray.

He is charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Jordan Waight, which occurred on November 23, 2023 on Barbara Harris Street in Belize City.

Police reported that around 9:02 a.m. on the day of the incident, information was received of shots fired in the area. Crime Investigation Branch personnel from Precinct 2 responded to the scene and learned that Waight had been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Initial investigations revealed that at about 9:00 a.m., Waight was walking along Barbara Harris Street heading toward Lacroix Boulevard when he was ambushed from behind by a lone gunman. The suspect, described as a dark-complexioned male of medium build with dreadlocks, was reportedly dressed in a red shirt and riding a bicycle. He allegedly fired a single shot that struck Waight in the head.

Waight collapsed at the scene and was rushed to KHMH, where he was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m.

Police processed the crime scene and conducted further investigations, during which statements were recorded and surveillance footage was retrieved. The evidence led investigators to detain Cacho on May 2, 2024, and he was formally charged with murder on May 6, 2024 when he first appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. Due to the nature of the offense, bail was denied.

Cacho has now been on remand at the Belize Central Prison for approximately one year, eight months, and 25 days.

Police records also show that Cacho had previously been charged in 2015 for the murder of Michael Welch and the attempted murder of Kingsley Morrison. In that incident, Welch was fatally shot on March 1, 2015, while he and Morrison were at a residence on Periwinkle Street. Morrison survived the attack with injuries.

Cacho will remain on remand pending the start of his trial in April.
