By Breaking Belize News Staff: Travis D. Flowers, a 45-year-old employee of the Belize City Council’s Enforcement Department, remains in custody more than two months after being charged with the attempted murder of a co-worker. Flowers, who appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning, has been denied bail for a second time.

Flowers was initially arraigned on March 11, 2025, following a violent altercation on March 8 that left fellow City Council worker Calvin Cumberbatch, 44, with gunshot wounds to the shoulder and abdomen. The shooting allegedly stemmed from a confrontation on West Street during which Flowers, reportedly driving a black SUV, exited his vehicle and fired at Cumberbatch after an exchange of words turned physical.

Cumberbatch, a Transport Evaluator for the Council, told police he was unarmed and only defended himself after Flowers attempted to punch him. According to the report, Flowers retaliated with gunfire using a licensed 9mm Glock pistol. The firearm was later recovered with 15 live rounds when Flowers was detained on Vernon Street.

During Tuesday’s court session, Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers informed Flowers that no case file was yet available, but that disclosures are expected by his next court appearance on July 11. Flowers requested bail, but was reminded that only the High Court could consider the request, given that his first application had already been denied there by Justice Pilgrim in late March.

“It’s not impossible to apply a second time,” the Chief Magistrate advised, “but it’s a chance you’ll have to take.”

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. However, Flowers’ continued detention underscores the seriousness of the charge and the difficulty of securing bail in cases involving firearms and allegations of attempted murder.
