Transportation more expensive as fuel prices keep soaring

By Zoila Palma:  Motorists and commuters in Belize faced higher transportation costs in September, with the category recording a 10.7 percent increase compared to the same month in 2025, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The SIB’s September 2026 Consumer Price Index report shows that diesel recorded the largest increase among the listed motor vehicle fuels.

The average price per gallon climbed from $11.92 in September 2025 to $15.69 in September 2026, an increase of $3.77. Regular gasoline increased by $1.76 per gallon, rising from $12.01 to $13.78, while premium gasoline rose from $13.21 to $14.62, an increase of $1.40.

The cost of passenger transportation services also increased significantly, rising by 15.2 percent over the year.

The report attributed this increase to higher bus and taxi fares, as well as rising international airfares. These increases contributed to transportation being one of the leading drivers of Belize’s overall inflation rate of 4.7 percent in September.
