By Zoila Palma: In December 2024, Belize experienced a 0.5% decrease in the overall transport category compared to the same month in the previous year, according to data from the Statistical Institute of Belize.
The decline was largely driven by lower prices across all types of motor vehicle fuels.
The average price of diesel saw a significant drop, falling by $1.38 per gallon from $13.21 in December 2023 to $11.83 in December 2024.
Similarly, regular gasoline prices decreased by $0.74, from $12.66 to $11.93 per gallon, while premium gasoline prices saw a smaller decrease of $0.07, from $13.47 to $13.40.
However, this overall decrease was offset by a rise in the cost of passenger transport services, which increased by 9%.
This surge in transport costs was attributed to higher fares for intercity taxis and rising domestic and international airfare prices.
