By Aaron Humes: In a significant move to enhance the transport sector, the Cabinet has approved several amendments to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 230. The changes aim to clarify the scope of the Dealer’s General Licence, particularly for motorcycle and motor vehicle repairs. This includes the introduction of a separate licensing regime for motorcycle dealers, which will come with corresponding fees. Additionally, the new regulations will harmonize penalties for offences under the Dealer’s General Licence, ensuring fairness and enforceability within the industry.
In a bid to improve public transportation infrastructure, Cabinet also allocated $2 million for the rehabilitation of the Belize City (Novelo’s) and Belmopan Bus terminals, the main hubs of the national bus system. The upgrades are expected to enhance the overall experience for commuters and support the growth of the transport network.
Furthermore, in an effort to promote environmentally friendly transportation, the Cabinet approved a reduction of import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to just 10 percent. This initiative aims to incentivize a shift towards more energy-efficient and cost-effective vehicles, supporting the country’s green transition agenda.
These steps reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing the transport sector while also addressing environmental concerns and improving public transport facilities for citizens.
