By Zoila Palma: Today, CEO in the Ministry of Transport Chester Williams issued a statement reiterating the importance of motorcycle training.
CEO Williams says that training will not stop accidents but it will help to reduce it.
“Now after so many years of doing nothing, we have people who are trying to do something to help save our young people and all of a sudden nothing becomes active to try and stop something that can possibly help our people. I will be the first to tell you that yes the training will not stop all the accidents but God knows it will help to reduce it tremendously. Why? Because it will training the rider in defense driving, rules of the road and critical decision making in tight situations. This is what is lacking, many of our young people just wait until the are 18 and can afford a motorcycle to go and buy one without any kind of training to ride it,” Williams explained.
In addition, CEO Williams says that riding a motorcycle is a skill and every skill requires theoretical and practical training to become good at it.
CEO Williams assured that the “new system will not only prepare our riders to better handle their motorcycles on the road and to be more verse in the rules of the road, but it will also decrease the corruption in the system. Once you have completed the training and is certified then there is no need for the licensing officer to charge you nothing for your license other that the legal required fees.”
CEO Williams urges Belizeans to look at it holistically and think of the benefits and the lives it can save.
