TRAGIC BREAKING NEWS: Esperanza’s Luis ‘Sweets’ Martinez passes away after scoring goal in San Ignacio-Santa Elena 5-A-Side Football Tournament

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Ignacio-Santa Elena football community is mourning the sudden loss of 56-year-old football player Luis ‘Sweets’ Martinez, who tragically passed away on Thursday night at Falcon Field in San Ignacio while playing a five-a-side football game.

San Ignacio-Santa Elena Mayor Earl Trapp said Martinez had just scored a goal for the San Ignacio-Santa Elena  Town Council team against Hillview in the San Ignacio-Santa Elena 5-A-Side Christmas Tournament, which kicked off on Tuesday.

Martinez entered the game during the last five minutes of the first half and managed to score a goal. However, during halftime, he complained that he wasn’t feeling well and subsequently collapsed by the team bench. Despite the immediate response and efforts to transport him to the San Ignacio Hospital, Martinez was declared dead. The cause of death is believed to have been a heart attack.
