By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A man is facing a drug charge after police reported finding cannabis on him during a chance encounter outside a store in Orange Walk Town.
According to the Belize Police Department, on July 7, 2026, officers on mobile patrol along Ziricote Street stopped at a store on the same street. As one officer passed a black car parked in front of the police vehicle, he reported smelling the aroma of marijuana coming from the back seat area.
The officer approached the rear passenger door, where a man was seated, and asked whether he was smoking marijuana. According to police, the man answered yes. He was instructed to step out and informed that a search would be conducted, and when asked whether he had more marijuana on him, he reportedly replied that he had his personal smoke.
During the search, police said they found a clear plastic bag containing a green leafy substance suspected to be cannabis in his front pants pocket. The man was cautioned and chose to remain silent, and was escorted to the Orange Walk Police Station.
At the station, he was identified as 34-year-old Jamie Adam Quijano, a camera operator and news editor of Orange Walk Town. Police said the suspected drug was weighed at the station at 13.22 grams, after an initial weighing at the scene, and was sealed and labelled as evidence in his presence.
Quijano was subsequently arrested and formally charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug.
