Traffic disrupted during rush hour in Belize City as teachers step up protest action

Posted: Wednesday, June 4, 2025. 1:37 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Members of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) in Belize City, identified by their bright green shirts, brought traffic to a halt this morning as they staged a protest at various locations, highlighting their ongoing struggles for better working conditions and salary adjustments. It follows similar protests in the South at Dangriga and Bella Vista, Toledo District earlier this morning.

The protest began with several teachers intentionally parking their vehicles across the bridge with their hoods raised, symbolizing “broken down” cars as part of their demonstration. This action caused significant delays during the busy morning rush hour, prompting swift intervention from local police, who were tasked with managing the flow of traffic. Tow trucks were seen removing the vehicles as the situation unfolded, but not before many commuters expressed frustration at the unexpected disruption.

While some travelers voiced their irritation at the stalled traffic, many others reflected on the protest’s larger message. The Belize National Teachers’ Union has been vocal about unresolved issues, including ongoing salary negotiations with the government. Although no official statement was released by the union following the protest, teachers are determined to make their concerns heard.

Later, teachers briefly blocked the Douglas Jones Street/Freetown Road/Cinderella Plaza intersection around midday, again claiming their vehicles had “broken down.” This protest lasted a mere 15 minutes, ending at 12:05 p.m.

Reports from Corozal Town indicated that there were similar protests there at the main entrances to the town.

The Union’s members have comprehensively rejected the Government’s offer of a 3.5 percent salary increase and are also requesting the restoration of an increment frozen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
