By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that occurred in Northern Belize.

Police responded to a report between miles 60 and 61 on the Philip Goldson Highway on Wednesday morning just before 10 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed a Nissan Frontier pickup with extensive damage to its front portion, facing an easterly direction about 11 feet off the highway. They also observed a man identified as 34-year-old Sergio Jair Cantun, of San Jose Nuevo Palmar Village, Orange Walk District, trapped behind the steering wheel. About 125 feet away, on the extreme right of the highway, police saw a Hawk Mahindra pickup with extensive damage to its front portion, on its side facing a northerly direction. Inside the pickup, they observed a female person identified as 19-year-old Alva Magaña, a Belizean domestic of Yo Creek Village, Orange Walk District, trapped inside. About 11 feet behind the Mahindra pickup, on the pavement of the highway, lay the lifeless body of a female identified as 44-year-old Olga Imelda Chi, a Belizean domestic of San Luis Village, Orange Walk District.

Initial investigation revealed that Olga Imelda Chi was driving the Mahindra pickup, accompanied by Alva Magaña, when she allegedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with the Nissan Frontier, which at the time was being driven by Sergio Cantun. At the time of the incident Cantun was accompanied by his wife, 37-year-old Yahaira Mai, a Belizean domestic, along with two minors. All of them sustained varying degrees of injuries. The body of Olga Chi was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
