By Aaron Humes: The International Labour Organization (ILO) Standards Application Committee will be complained to if the Government does not cease scapegoating and personally attacking leaders of Belize’s trade unions during the ongoing and various trade disputes, the National Trade Union of Congress of Belize (NTUCB) warned today.

“Union leaders are elected representatives of working people, not political pawns,” President Ella Waight said at a press conference today. “The attempt to undermine their character for political gain not only weakens the democratic voice of workers, but also erodes public trust in fair labour practices.” She continued that “respectful dialogue,” not “character assassination”, is called for.

Today’s briefing featured not only the major unions currently in disputes with various branches of the Government – the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU); Public Service Union (PSU); Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM); Christian Workers’ Union (CWU); University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) and Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers’ Union (KHMH-AWU), but support from other union affiliates and Senator representing trade unions and civil society Glenfield Dennison. President Waight said this was by design – to demonstrate solidarity among members and send a message to the government “that the labour movement is coordinated, resolute and serious,” counter alleged “propaganda” and show that the collective demands are reasonable and that industrial action will benefit ordinary citizens.

Waight also announced that a rally will be held in Belize City next Saturday, June 28, time and venue to be announced.
