Trade Union Congress confirms University Hospital land purchase hasn’t gone through yet – land flipped for 1,000 percent markup

By Aaron Humes: According to President of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), documents they have inspected at the Lands Department confirm that the original purchase price for the 2 parcels – 15 acres in toto – of land recently purchased by Government for the future University Hospital is substantially lower than the price Government paid to acquire it.

Luis Martinez told us in a telephone conversation that the total price was $610,000. With the confirmed purchase price of $6.9 million, the former land owners made a 1,031 percent markup on their profit from the sale.

But the transaction has not yet been completed and the land has not been transferred, so Martinez said there is still time to rescind the purchase and build the Hospital on University of Belize land – no matter its “unsuitability” in the eyes of the Government.

Martinez also confirmed that the Congress, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University, has written to Chairman Godfrey Smith requesting a meeting to discuss the issue. We understand Smith is out of the country and has yet to respond.

On the matter of Friday’s protest called by Nigel Petillo in front of the Prime Minister’s office at the Sir Edney Cain Building in Belmopan, Martinez said he would be there personally, but noted that the member unions of the NTUCB would need to consult members individually in order to receive their consent to take part.
