By Aaron Humes: Accusing the Belize Police Department of appearing to be complicit in the abduction of Joseph Budna, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has called for the Senate to lead an inquiry into “the role of Belize law enforcement and its leadership in this incident.”
The Congress noted with dismay that the video footage of the August 22 incident appears to show a police officer failing to render assistance after engaging with Budna’s alleged abductors, whom he says were police officers. “The video evidence suggests that, rather than protecting a citizen from being forcibly taken, law enforcement may have actively facilitated this illegal act,” the Congress suggests.
Distinction is drawn between Budna’s own illegal activity and the alleged denial of due process and his “extrajudicial extradition” with alleged assistance or willful negligence by Police.
The NTUCB further called for full accountability for all alleged to be involved; a comprehensive report to be produced of what took place, who is responsible and actions to prevent a repeat; and transparency from the Government on any involvement in this matter, which it has repeatedly denied.
The NTUCB also takes a shot at the proposed 13th Constitutional amendment, suggesting that it “would open the door to legalizing precisely the type of unlawful measures witnessed in this incident.”
Police have rescheduled a planned media briefing for Monday after Prime Minister John Briceño receives the formal investigation report from Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado and Minister Kareem Musa.
