By Aaron Humes: The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) in a statement has backed its affiliate unions, which are currently in various disputes with the Government, saying that their demands for fairness and respect cannot be ignored.

The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU); Public Service Union (PSU); and Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) are reported to have rejected a compromise proposal from Government for 3.5 percent salary increases, unfreezing of increments and associated payments as too little and in some cases too late. The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers Union (KHMHAWU) has stepped up pressure over pensions for its members; and the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) has joined the fight, asking for the return of the University’s subvention.

The NTUCB argues that the recent salary hikes for Cabinet Secretary Stewart Leslie and Chief Executive Officers were “tone-deaf” and insulted teachers and public officers who feel neglected. It adds that the right “to agitate, to demonstrate and to strike is a cornerstone of unionism and a protected tool when the legitimate concerns of workers are met with disregard and disrespect.

The Congress says that in order to “rebuild trust” with the Public Service and avoid the labour force uniting in disagreement, the Government must set up the KHMH workers’ pension payments; reinstate teachers and public officers’ increments and increase their salaries, and restore the University of Belize subvention.
