One day after the events that led to the reopening of the Haitian barrier on the Haitian-Dominican border, commercial activities formally resumed on Friday, December 15, 2023. It was an opportunity for entrepreneurs and traders on both sides of the island to reactivate their links.

At the border market of Dajabón, Dominican Republic, in the stores and grocery stores on the other side of the border, Haitians and Dominicans intermingled with the sole objective of getting supplies. Ouanaminthe and Dajabón experienced a moment of madness after the resumption of commercial activities, according to the report this Friday. In the early morning, to cross the Dominican barrier, Dominican soldiers demanded that the Haitians have their fingerprints taken.

Customs agents and those from the Polifront unit, powerless the day before to prevent Haitians and Dominicans from breaking the Haitian border barrier, were present in the space to ensure the safety of buyers and sellers.

If the departmental authorities have not yet reacted to the crime committed Thursday, December 14 by Haitian and Dominican citizens who had broken down the Haitian barrier at the border with the purpose of facilitating commercial exchanges, the owners of trucks, businesses, wholesalers and small retailers from other departments of the country had the chance to buy and sell at the neighboring market.

However, the president of the Federation of Associations of Traders of the North-East of Haiti (FACNEH), Clément Pierre, who does not rule out the possibility of severing commercial relations with the Dominicans if nothing is done regarding the requests of civil society in Ouanaminthe to have Dominican leaders apologize to Haiti after suspending diplomatic relations, asks other traders in the region to be vigilant in relation to the attitude displayed by the neighboring officials.

“For once, I condemn the method used to reopen the border. It’s sickening and sad. I am in shock. I am wondering if it is possible for me to continue attending the Dominican Republic. I urge my trader brothers and sisters to be very vigilant,” he insisted. Mr. Pierre describes the incident that occurred as a conspiracy and holds the Haitian authorities responsible for this situation.

Note that the section of the barrier that was broken has not yet been reinstalled.
