By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton has raised concerns over the proposed “Safe Third Country” Agreement between Belize and the United States, calling it a matter of “deep national concern” that requires serious public scrutiny.

In a statement issued today, Panton said while Belize remains committed to regional cooperation on migration and humanitarian issues, the country lacks the institutional capacity, financial resources, and technical systems needed to manage such an arrangement.

She noted that Belize’s immigration and asylum departments are understaffed, underfunded, and ill-equipped to process and support asylum seekers effectively. Without adequate infrastructure, trained personnel, and security mechanisms, she warned that the agreement could expose Belize to social, national, and security risks.

Panton and the UDP Parliamentarian Caucus are calling for immediate consultations with key stakeholders and for the government to publicly disclose the terms and conditions of the proposed agreement before making any final decisions.

“Belize’s sovereignty, national security, and limited resources must not be compromised,” Panton emphasized, adding that any decision must be guided by transparency, preparedness, and the best interests of the Belizean people.
