Tracy Taegar Panton — Paving the way for Belizean women in politics

By Zoila Palma: On March 14, 2025, Tracy Panton was sworn in as the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives — becoming the first woman in Belize’s history to hold that position.

Only months later, Panton has been endorsed as the new leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), making her the first woman ever to lead a major mass political party in Belize.

These dual “firsts” — as both opposition leader and party leader — mark a watershed in Belizean politics, especially for girls and women with ambitions for public leadership.

Prior to entering politics, Panton served in the public service.

Her parliamentary career began in 2015, when she was elected as the representative for the Albert constituency.

Over the years, she built a reputation for competence in public administration and economic development.

In the 2025 general election, although her party (UDP) suffered heavy losses — winning only 5 of 31 seats — Panton retained her own seat and emerged as the most suitable candidate for leading the opposition, especially after the defeat of the previous opposition leader.

After her swearing-in, Panton committed publicly to “elevate the debate,” shift away from personal attacks, and focus on national issues such as economic recovery, governance reform, and social equity.

Her ascent to both opposition leader and party leader challenges a long-standing tradition of male-dominated politics in Belize.

It sends a powerful message that women can lead at the highest levels of political decision-making.

As she put it at her swearing-in as Leader of the Opposition: this milestone is not just for her — but “for all women and girls in this country who aspire for leadership.”
