Tracy Panton wins Albert Division, emphasizes importance of democracy and respect for opponents

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: United Democratic Party’s (UDP) Tracy Panton clinched victory again in Belize City’s Albert Division during Belize’s General Elections on Wednesday, March 12, defeating People’s United Party’s (PUP) challenger Kaya Cattouse, and two others.

Panton secured 1,243 votes, while Cattouse garnered 1,014. Another UDP candidate, Jose Luis Espat, received 20 votes, and PDM’s Cornelio Rogelio Galvez obtained three.

An incumbent, Panton, was leading a faction of the United Democratic Party, also known as the Alliance for Democracy, that split from leader Shyne Barrow, who lost his Mesopotamia seat.

Emphasizing the historic importance of the moment for women and democracy, Panton expressed her gratitude, after the results were announced.

“I am so grateful there is nothing but gratitude that I see,” she said.

“This is a very important moment in the history of this country, a very important moment for women in this country, it’s a very important moment for democracy in this country.”

Panton said she owed her victory to the hard work of her campaign team.

“We take no opponent for granted,” she said.

“We have always been respectful of our opponents because we know that if the machinery doesn’t work on election day, it doesn’t matter how hard you work for the four years before elections. If your machinery doesn’t work on the election day you can lose. And my machinery come out!” she hollered.

Many see Panton as the new leader that the Opposition UDP needs.
