By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Opposition Leader and United Democratic Party Leader Tracy Panton is calling for fairness, accountability and equal protection under the law, warning that inconsistent treatment of offences can undermine public confidence in Belize’s institutions.
In a public statement titled “We Need Systems That Are Fair to All,” Panton argued that the law must be applied impartially, regardless of a person’s political connections, social standing or influence.
“When similar offences are treated differently, public trust is weakened and confidence in our institutions is diminished,” Panton stated.
She emphasized that no individual should be above the law and that every Belizean deserves its protection.
Panton placed particular emphasis on sexual violence complaints, saying women, children and all individuals who report such offences must be treated with dignity and fairness.
She said complainants deserve access to support and confidence that their reports will receive proper consideration, regardless of the identity or influence of the accused.
The Opposition Leader also challenged political and institutional leaders to demonstrate integrity when making difficult decisions.
According to Panton, personal relationships, political loyalties and positions of authority must never determine how individuals are treated under the law.
Her statement did not identify a particular case or individual but raised broader concerns about consistency and accountability within Belize’s institutions.
Panton concluded by calling for equal treatment, equal consideration and equal protection under the law, urging Belizeans to remain vigilant.
