By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton is calling on Ambassador Alexis Rosado to voluntarily step aside from his involvement in Belize’s case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) while serious criminal proceedings against him remain unresolved.

In a strongly worded statement, Panton questioned whether Rosado should continue representing Belize following allegations involving the rape of a minor.

Her comments follow public debate over statements by the Speaker of the House of Representatives concerning Rosado’s continued involvement in Belize’s ICJ case.

Panton acknowledged that the allegations do not establish guilt and emphasized that Rosado is entitled to the presumption of innocence, due process and a fair hearing.

“Only the judiciary can determine criminal guilt,” she stated.

However, the UDP leader argued that temporarily stepping aside from an official appointment while criminal proceedings are pending should not be interpreted as a declaration of guilt.

Panton also questioned the Government’s decision to retain Rosado in his role, noting that Prime Minister John Briceño has defended his continued involvement based on his experience and the importance of Belize’s ICJ proceedings.

She called on the Government to explain how its decision meets appropriate standards of public accountability while safeguarding Belize’s national interests.

Panton urged Rosado to step aside voluntarily rather than wait for action from the administration.

The Opposition Leader also emphasized the importance of protecting the dignity and privacy of individuals who report sexual violence, particularly children.

Rosado remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations against him have not been established as fact by a court.
