By Aaron Humes: New Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Tracy Taegar-Panton, made an official return to the party’s headquarters on Youth For the Future Drive on Friday. Last October, party members needed force and a court order, while this time Panton and her team were handed the keys.
But any celebratory mood was quickly overshadowed by the conditions inside. Panton described the state of the premises as “unacceptable,” suggesting that a simple cleanup would not suffice: “We have a lot of work to do. This is the home of the United Democratic Party, it is where we welcome our caretakers, standard bearers, elected area representatives, the membership, the wider membership of the United Democratic Party. We must treat it with love and with pride. And so it is important that we get to work ASAP (as soon as possible) to bring it back up to standard,” she told The Guardian/Plain and Straight’s Alfonso Noble.
Later she told Channel 7 News’ Jules Vasquez that the delay in returning to the headquarters was due to her busy schedule following the recent party convention and House committee meetings. A planned press briefing is scheduled for Tuesday morning, December 9.
The pressing need for repairs and restoration within the headquarters has led Panton to appeal for help from supporters and the wider Belizean community. In a heartfelt social media post, she highlighted the importance of collective responsibility, stating, “Each one help one… No contribution is too small when it is being used for a good cause. We are indeed: Stronger Together.”
But Alberto August, the party’s former Vice-Chairman, while publicly praising the peaceful transition of leadership this week on social media, contrasted it with the tumult of October 2024, which left the premises damaged and, he said, items unaccounted for.
