Tourism Board, City Council inaugurate Mahogany Street Marketplace

By Aaron Humes: Mahogany Street’s homely stalls long located along the strip have been re-organized into a full-time marketplace by the Belize Tourism Board and Belize City Council.

Located along what is known as the Mahogany Street Reserve straddling Pickstock and Lake Independence Divisions, Deputy Mayor Allan Pollard reiterated the Council’s commitment to supporting small businesses, noting that the calls have been coming thick and fast for booths in the area. And the proprietors are 100 percent Belizean – offering the opportunity vendors have long been asking for.

Mayor Bernard Wagner aimed a dig at political rivals, noting that the best social program is putting people to work, rather than consistent handouts. The Reserve grew out of individual ingenuity which the Government recognizes and aims to serve and assist them. He promised further expansion of the market along the thoroughfare.

The first phase runs from Evergreen to Oleander Streets with another 20 booths planned for Oleander Street to McKay Boulevard.
