By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The tour guide at the center of a social media controversy is now speaking out, saying he was under the influence of alcohol when he made the now-viral comment.
Alexander Mes told reporters that he was dealing with personal issues at the time and was not in a clear state of mind when he posted the remark.
“I was under the influence… I was not in my correct state of mind,” Mes said, explaining that he had been drinking earlier that day and did not realize the impact of his comment until hours later.
He said he only became aware of the backlash after checking his phone later that night, when he was met with what he described as “cyber attacks” from the public.
Mes admitted that the comment was inappropriate but maintained that he did not intend to insult anyone, describing it as a joke that “went too far.”
Despite acknowledging the situation, he expressed concern about the consequences, particularly the possibility of losing his tour guide license.
“I’ve been in this industry for 11 years… for one comment? I don’t think so,” he said.
Belize tourism officials have confirmed that the matter is currently under review.
