By Jose Luis Cruz: 23-year-old freelance tour guide from Caye Caulker island, Ashton Young, was sent to prison as he was unable to post the required bail after being arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He faces two counts of theft, after being accused of stealing glass bottles in sacks and in a bucket.
It is alleged that on December 12, 2023, Young twice stole glass bottles from one Emilio Novelo, a fisherman and landlord on the island. The first incident involved a sack of bottles, and later that day, Young allegedly returned to steal another sack containing 72 bottles and a bucket with 24 bottles.
After initially pleading guilty and offering an explanation, Young changed his plea upon the magistrate’s intervention. He claimed it was a misunderstanding, stating he had permission to take bottles from a friend’s yard but mistakenly entered the wrong property. The magistrate, recognizing Young’s explanation as a defense, entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf and set bail at $1,000 with one surety. The conditions include no contact with the complainant or witnesses and maintaining a distance of 100 yards from the complainant.
Young was unable to settle outstanding court fines of $620 and as a result he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
