Top Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarria to compete in Panama with US Team Rio Grande

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: One of Belize’s best cyclists, Derrick Chavarria, is heading to Panama with United States’ Team Rio Grande to compete in the XLIII International Cycling Tour of Chiriquí (Vuelta Ciclista Internacional a Chiriquí).

“We know you’ll do your best and continue to make us proud,” the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) said in a social media post.

The CFB said the Tour of Chiriquí is an international stage race which runs from January 8 to 14, 2024.

The cyclists will face seven stages, covering 729.8 kilometres (456.1 miles), with a variety of challenges, such as a Team Time Trial, a flat terrain, three mountain days, and two closed circuits.

On January 1, Chavarria placed third in the 96-mile 33^rd Krem New Year’s Day Cycling Classic which he won in 2023. He also won the Under 23 National Time Trial races in the National Championships in 2022 and 2023.

Chavarria has also represented Belize internationally winning the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on October 24, 2021. He has also had solid performances in the Caribbean Cycling Championships and the Central American and Caribbean Games. Additionally, he also competed in the Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, in August 2023.

Twenty-year-old Chavarria was born on August 17, 2003.
