Tony’s BBQ seeks public support after MIDH confirms relocation necessary for Belcan Bridge Replacement Project

By Breaking Belize News Staff:Today, the owner of Tony’s BBQ made a public appeal calling on all patrons and the public to support the business tomorrow, July 22, 2026 at 11am as they will give an  interview to 7News Belize.

A statement from Tony’s BBQ said that they received a response from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) advising that the business must relocate by August 15.

“This follows a meeting held last week with representatives from the Belize City Council and MIDH, where I was presented with a letter giving us 30 days to vacate. I did not sign the letter because, during the meeting, Mr. Salazar of MIDH stated that we should not be concerned about what the letter said, as construction on the Belcan Bridge was not expected to begin until after the Christmas holidays.

Following that meeting, I submitted a formal letter of grievance outlining our concerns. We have now received a written response, which I will post below so everyone can read it and draw their own conclusions,” a statement from the business said.

The response letter from MIDH informed Tony’s BBQ that it had reviewed the circumstances and confirms that the requirement for Tony’s BBQ to vacate the road reserve remains necessary.

“This decision is based on the requirements for the safe and efficient implementation of the Belcan Bridge Replacement Project. It is not based solely on available open space in front of the establishment but also on the need to provide safe and unobstructed pedestrian access to and from the temporary crossing, including the full distance and circulation route between the BBQ shed and the access stairs, maintain emergency access and evacuation requirements, facilitate the movement and operation of contractors, construction equipment and machinery and ensure that the public road reserve remains available for its intended present and future public purposes,” MIDH explained.

Tony’s BBQ says that it has served that community for over 30 years and asks the public to join in “send a positive message that our community values and supports local businesses.”
