Tomorrow hurricane season officially begins; Here is everything Belize needs to know and do right now

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Tomorrow morning Belize wakes up to the official start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

June 1st marks the beginning of what meteorologists and emergency management officials consider the most dangerous six months of the year for this country and the wider Caribbean region. The season runs through November 30th with the peak of activity historically concentrated between August and October.
Belize has lived through the devastating reality of major hurricanes. Hurricane Hattie in 1961 nearly wiped Belize City off the map and prompted the construction of Belmopan as the new capital. Hurricane Keith in 2000 battered the northern cayes and coastal communities. Richard in 2010 made landfall in the south. Earl in 2016 cut across the country leaving flooding and destruction in its wake. This country knows what hurricanes can do. And it must never become complacent about the threat they represent.
The National Meteorological Service is already tracking moist and unstable conditions over the region as June 1st arrives. While no immediate threat is being monitored at this time the conditions that support tropical storm and hurricane development are present and active across the Atlantic basin.
So what should every Belizean household be doing right now before the season gets underway in earnest?
Start with your emergency kit. Every household should have a minimum of three days worth of water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, flashlights, batteries and a battery powered or hand crank radio. Do not wait until a storm is named to start gathering these supplies. By then the shelves are empty.
Know your evacuation route. Know where your nearest official shelter is located. Have a family communication plan so that everyone knows where to go and how to reach each other if a storm strikes while family members are separated.
Check your property now. Trim back trees and branches that could become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Secure loose items around your yard. Check your roof, your windows and your doors for any vulnerabilities that should be addressed before the season intensifies.
Follow official channels. The National Meteorological Service, the National Emergency Management Organization and Breaking Belize News will all be providing real time updates throughout the season. Make sure you are following reliable information sources and not social media rumors during a weather emergency.
The 2026 hurricane season begins tomorrow. The best time to prepare was yesterday. The second best time is right now.
Belize has survived storms before. It does so because its people take the threat seriously and prepare accordingly.
Do not wait. Get ready today. Hurricane season starts tomorrow.
