By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Toledo District Football Association (TDFA) can’t vote in the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) executive elections being held on Saturday at the FFB’s XVIII Ordinary Congress at Cahal Pech Village Resort in San Ignacio.

While the TDFA has a representative at the Congress, he won’t have a say in the elections which should return Sergio Chuc as president.

According to FFB Secretary General Earl Jones, the Toledo District Football Association was intervened by the FFB two years ago and up to now is still being administered by a Normalizing Committee. Jones said Normalizing Committees don’t have a right to vote.

So, only 19 of the 21 representatives with the right to vote will be determining the outcome of the FFB elections.

The FFB Congress normally has 21 members with voting rights: two from each of the seven football district associations, including Belmopan which is separate from Cayo, and seven from the Premier League of Belize.

Sergio Chuc will be reelected as president as he is the only candidate for the presidency of the FFB. Chuc will lead the biggest sports association in the country for four more years unless he doesn’t garner 51 percent of the votes (ten of 19 votes). That isn’t expected to happen but if it did, the Concacaf representative would proceed to name an interim president.

The FFB Executive Committee comprises the President, the Vice President, the Woman Member, and two Ordinary Members.

The other four incumbents are being challenged for their spots in the FFB’s Executive body.

Onan McLean and Rafael Avila are running against Cruz Gamez for the post of Vice President.

Georgina ‘Gina’ Zabaneh is challenging incumbent Jacqueline Pelayo for the post of Woman Member of the Executive Committee.

Ian Jones is hoping to get in as an Ordinary Member of the Executive instead of one of the incumbents, Marlon Kuylen and Shane Orio.

FFB Secretary General Earl Jones said the Electoral Committee headed by attorney Dave Cayetano approved all nine candidates who put up their names for the elections, which are held every four years.

According to the FFB Statutes, the election for Vice President will go to two rounds. One of the three candidates will be eliminated after the first round and the two with the highest numbers of votes will compete for the position in a second round.

The Woman Executive Member and the two Ordinary Executive Members are decided in one round of voting.

Jones said the secret ballot elections will be conducted by the Electoral Committee which will be assisted by retired Elections and Boundaries Department polling clerk Manuel Matus and supervised by Justice of the Peace and former Head of the Referees Amalio Briceño.

The Elections will be scrutinized by National Sports Council representative Mike Sosa and Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association Secretary General Hilly Martinez.

The elections will be overseen by Mario Monterrosa, Secretary General of the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) and Director for Member Associations of CONCACAF.
