By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Thursday, the Toledo Alcaldes Association and its partners the Maya Leaders Alliance and Julian Cho Society issued a statement expressing their solidarity with the cañeros and their families of the north in their “unwavering position demanding for justice and equity!”
“Belize is blessed with ‘wealth untold. But every day we see this wealth consolidated in the hands of a very few. We see the economic opportunities encouraged by our governments to these very few, including the multi-national corporations in tourism, agriculture and mining. Meanwhile, the majority of us Belizeans struggle to make ends meet with the ever-rising cost of living, enslaved to the very few,” the Toledo Alcaldes Association noted.
“This is the nightmare that has haunted the cañeros of the north and the BSCFA for years. For many cañeros sugar cane farming is their livelihood, the only source to make a decent and dignified life for their families and children. Taking away their livelihood is essentially destroying their life and dignity and the future of their children. When our lives, our dignity, our families and our children are threatened it is our duty to ensure that they are protected at all costs. This is the resounding message the daughter of the cañeros sent to our national leaders and our country: we are tired of promises, tired of being disrespected, tired of seeing our ‘wealth untold’ consolidated in the hands of a few while the majority of us Belizeans see no benefit,” the statement added.
In addition, the Toledo Alcaldes Association asserted that the plight of the cañeros resonates with the Maya people of southern Belize.
“Now, for forty years we have consistently defended our lives, our dignity, our families. This Government, while in opposition campaigned and promised that it would respect the rights of the Maya people of the south and work with our leaders to implement the CCJ Consent Order.
Today, the Government wants to see our leaders divided, is proposing a Maya land tenure policy that attempts to take away our rights to our lands from which our lives, dignity and families depend,” the Toledo Alcaldes Association stated.
The Association ended by expressing unwavering support with Yucatec and Maya-Mestizo sisters and brothers and all the cañeros in the north!
