Toledo Alcaldes Association concerned following Indian Creek incident

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Toledo Alcaldes Association and the Maya community  issued a statement saying that it is concerned regarding the Indian Creek incident.

“This is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly. We have requested and remain assured that Belizean authorities will undertake a comprehensive investigation into this matter. We appeal to the general public to safeguard the investigative process by allowing the time necessary and refer to the police statements for updates as their investigation process unfolds,” the association said.

The Toledo Alcaldes Association says that it “acknowledge the dedicated and united efforts of the Indian Creek villagers, leaders from neighbouring communities, the leadership of the Belize Police Force, and the Fairweather Camp Belize Defence Force for their commitment and guidance in efforts to preserve life.”

The association continues to advocate for the government to swiftly establish a system for resolving third-party claims and land disputes involving conflicting interests over property.

“It remains crucial to safeguard the rights of all parties and guarantee a fair, balanced, and just outcome pertaining to Maya land rights in southern Belize,” the association stressed.
