Government of Belize Press Release

The Toledo Agriculture Department, in partnership with UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Wellness, has launched the preparatory phase of the Cash Plus Nutrition project. This initiative aims to establish 12 backyard gardens across 12 villages in the Toledo District.

The targeted villages for this groundbreaking project include Dolores, Otoxha, Jalacte, Santa Cruz, Poite, San Vicente, Jordan, Santa Theresa, Corazon, Mabil Ha, San Lucas, and Machakilha. The primary objective is to improve child and maternal nutrition outcomes in these communities, with an estimated impact on around 500 families.

Over the past week, the Toledo Agriculture Department has provided crucial technical support for the establishment of these gardens. Subsequently, beneficiaries will undergo training in sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices, fostering long-term resilience.

To further support the initiative, the department will distribute assorted vegetable seedlings, promoting access to diverse and nutritious food options within these communities. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to enhancing the well-being of families in the Toledo District, emphasizing the vital link between agriculture, nutrition, and community development.
