By Horace Palacio: From child rapists to violent gang members and now the men who brutally chopped a helpless horse on video, Belize is once again facing a growing crisis of lawlessness and impunity.
The recent video showing young men laughing while hacking a horse with a machete has left the nation sickened. Even worse, these same individuals are believed to be linked to the theft of 15 horses worth over $225,000 from a farm near Ladyville. This isn’t petty crime. This is cruelty, calculated theft, and total disregard for life.
Enough is enough.
For far too long, Belize’s worst offenders have slipped through the cracks of a justice system that offers more leniency than deterrence. The public is demanding answers, justice—and for many, even removal. And one bold idea keeps resurfacing in public discourse:
Why doesn’t the Government of Belize send our worst criminals to serve their sentences in places like El Salvador, where prison is not a holiday—but a consequence?
El Salvador has made headlines for its mega-prisons, where gang leaders and violent offenders are locked away in harsh conditions, isolated from the outside world and each other. The controversial system has been criticized by human rights groups, but one thing is certain: it has struck fear into the hearts of those who once ruled the streets.
Should Belize adopt a similar approach? Perhaps not entirely. But one thing is clear—we can’t keep treating child rapists, repeat gang offenders, and animal abusers like they’re just misunderstood. The country is losing faith in the idea that justice will be served.
When someone rapes a child, when someone savagely tortures an animal, or when gangs terrorize communities with firearms, there must be real, undeniable consequences. Belizeans deserve to feel safe. And criminals need to know that prison isn’t a soft landing—it’s a place you don’t want to end up.
Sending offenders to a regional super-max facility—or creating one of our own—may sound extreme. But if that’s what it takes to protect law-abiding citizens, then maybe it’s time to stop being lenient and start being unapologetically firm.
Because as it stands, the message being sent to criminals is loud and clear: you can do whatever you want, and you might just get away with it.
