By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) conducted a comprehensive training workshop on aquaculture management practices for tilapia farming on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Julian Cho Technical High School. This initiative aims to enhance the skills of farmers in the Toledo District, ensuring sustainable and productive fish farming in the region.
The workshop was facilitated by officers from the Central Farm Tilapia Hatchery, in collaboration with the Toledo District Agriculture Department and Julian Cho Technical High School (JCTHS). According to MAFSE, the 17 farmers who participated in the workshop benefited from hands-on guidance on key practices such as feeding techniques, water quality management, and strategies for maintaining healthy fish stocks.
“The training aimed at enhancing the skills of farmers in effective tilapia management practices to support sustainable and productive fish farming in the region,” the Ministry of Agriculture stated in their release.
Participants were provided with detailed instruction on various aspects of tilapia farming, with a focus on practical applications that would directly benefit their farming operations. The training sessions included demonstrations and interactive activities to ensure that farmers could effectively implement what they learned.
MAFSE said each participant received a certificate of participation, recognizing their dedication to improving their aquaculture knowledge and contributing to the advancement of the sector in the Toledo District. This certification reflects their commitment to adopting best practices and continuously enhancing their skills.
This workshop is part of a broader effort by MAFSE to support and develop the aquaculture sector in Belize, promoting sustainable practices and improving the livelihoods of local farmers.
