Three weeks of heatwaves in Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says that Belize has been experiencing a heatwave since May 1, 2024.

Daily temperatures continue to soar and the Ministry of Health and Wellness has issued several heat alerts.

“We are in a heatwave. Actually, this heat current heatwave started from as early as the first day or so of May,” Gordon said.

The Chief Meteorologist said that the humidity has been increasing.

“And the primary reason for this is that we are under a ridge of high pressure at the mid-levels of the atmosphere which is suppressing in a sort of upward motion. So it’s keeping all the heat trapped near the surface and therefore you are seeing a lot of hazy, smoky conditions,” he explained.

In addition, Gordon explained that the haze in San Ignacio and Santa Elena is due to mild Saharan dust.

“So restricted visibility, poor conditions if you are somebody who has asthma, that type of thing, it could affect you as well. So certainly very difficult times in terms of weather conditions, extreme heat along with the smoke and haze,” Gordon expressed.

Gordon says that the weather is expected to continue like this for the next 4 to 6 days.
