By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP); According to a report from the BBC, three people have been killed and nearly 15 others injured in Jamaica while preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm expected to bring catastrophic conditions to the island.
Jamaica’s Minister of Health, Chris Tufton, confirmed the deaths, stating that they occurred during storm preparation efforts.
“Over the past few days, in preparation for the storm, we have had three deaths, three deaths linked to cutting down of trees, and in one instance, electrocution because of, or due to, the cutting down of a tree,” Tufton told reporters.
One of the victims, a health worker in St. Elizabeth, was struck by a falling tree. He was airlifted to hospital but later died of his injuries, according to the Jamaica Observer, cited by the BBC.
Tufton added that about 15 people were injured, mainly from falling off rooftops and trees while securing homes and removing debris.
“We urge the public to exercise extreme caution,” Jamaica’s Ministry of Health said in a statement. “Activities such as climbing roofs, securing sandbags, or cutting trees may seem manageable, but even minor mistakes during hurricane conditions can result in serious injury or death.”
The BBC also reports that Hurricane Melissa has already claimed four lives in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, bringing the regional death toll to seven so far.
With Melissa packing winds of over 175 mph, Jamaican authorities warn that the country faces significant infrastructure damage and dangerous flooding as the storm continues to approach the island.
