By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a major development from the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, three of four men charged with the 2024 murder of cab driver Shawn Albert Ortiz Campbell were freed of all charges last Thursday, following a directive from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Those released include Police Constable Peter Jamal Jeremy Perez, 23; Kyle Nolbert Stephon Domingo, 35; and Gasman Gilmore Jones, 28. The trio had been jointly charged with 47-year-old Charles Alexander Brown, a worker with the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), for the November 4, 2024 stabbing death of Campbell on Jaguar Avenue.
Just before noon, the three men appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #3, where the court formally withdrew all charges against them. While no reason was stated in open court, reliable sources confirm that the DPP intends to use the three as accomplice witnesses against the remaining accused, Charles Brown, who remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison.
The four were first arraigned for Campbell’s murder on November 6, 2024.
According to police reports, around 3:00 a.m. on November 4, 2024, Campbell was allegedly attacked and stabbed by one of four men after leaving a gathering with a friend. Campbell, 43, of Fern Lane, was rushed to the KHMH, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 a.m. The fatal wound was a stab to the left side of his chest.
Crime scene personnel recovered surveillance footage showing the assault, and police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of the four accused. While PC Perez declined to give a statement, Domingo, Jones, and Brown all provided police interviews, with Domingo offering a statement under caution less than 24 hours after the killing.
The matter was last in court on July 11, 2025, for disclosure. The next hearing—now solely for Brown—is scheduled for August 26, 2025, where a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) will determine if there is enough evidence for a Supreme Court trial.
The release of the three men narrows the focus of the case to Brown, as the prosecution shifts its strategy to secure a conviction using testimony from the accused-turned-witnesses.
