By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize has issued a three‑year stadium ban to Port Layola’s Kenroy Linarez after he assaulted referee Victor Caliz during the Opening Season Semifinal Leg 2 between Port Layola FC and Progresso FC at the Marion Jones Stadium.
The confrontation required immediate intervention from security personnel and was widely condemned across the football community. After reviewing the incident, the PLB Disciplinary Committee ruled that Linarez is barred from attending:
- All Premier League of Belize matches, and
- All Football Federation of Belize (FFB) and affiliate‑sanctioned matches
for a period of three years.
Port Layola FC was fined BZD $500 for spectator misconduct under aggravated liability provisions.
A Breaking Point for a Veteran FIFA Referee
The assault on November 30 — followed by further abuse directed at him during the PLB Final on December 13 — became the breaking point for Caliz, a FIFA referee with international experience. After reflection, Caliz informed that he would be retiring from active refereeing, citing the increasing danger and lack of respect shown toward match officials.
The PLB expressed deep concern over the trend of hostility and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting referees and preserving the integrity of the sport.
