By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 25-year-old construction worker from Lords Bank is serving the second night of a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to burglary. Phillip Guzman admitted to entering a home in Lords Bank Village with the intent to steal, though nothing was taken during the incident.

Guzman was charged with burglarizing the residence on October 5, 2024. He entered his guilty plea moments before the prosecutor was set to call the virtual complainant to testify. Due to the seriousness of the offence—which carries a maximum penalty of seven years—he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

According to police, officers responded to a report of a burglary around 11:20 a.m. on October 5, 2024. The home-owner, a 24-year-old call center representative, told investigators that she had been asleep around 5:00 a.m. when she was awakened by noises coming from the lower flat of her two-story home.

She reported that upon checking, she was confronted and attacked by a man she identified as Guzman. During the struggle, she managed to grab a knife and inflict two stab wounds to his upper back. She then ran outside for help.

She told police that Guzman approached her outside the home, pleading, “Please don’t say anything to anyone,” before fleeing the scene. The woman sustained minor scratches to her neck and chest and was issued medico-legal forms for evaluation. Police reported that no medical form was returned, and as a result, the injuries were not classified, leaving burglary as the only charge.

Guzman is now serving his two-year sentence at the Belize Central Prison.
