By Aaron Humes: Though the incidents are 12 years apart, tonight’s reported robbery in which a suspect was apparently killed brings back memories for residents of Santa Elena Town, Cayo District.
On June 29, 2013, a pair of cousins decided to rob Anna’s Supermarket around 8:25 p.m. Per a report by the Amandala newspaper at the time, along with a third unnamed accomplice, they tried holding up the security guard with their own weapons, a gun and two machete, but after the guard fought off the first robber and shot him dead with his own .38 Special revolver, he shot the second in the forehead and dodged the third by getting into a passing vehicle, while sustaining a wound to his left shoulder after his weapon went off during the struggle with the first attacker.
Police also sought a fourth man in connection with the incident, but it is unclear if the other two accomplices were ever found or identified. The first two attackers were named as cousins Aaron, 25, and Isvi Hoil, 20, both of Santa Elena Town. The security guard, never named, was treated for his injuries, and police cursorily put together a file on the incident for the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), though no charges were expected to be filed.
Channel 7 News reported that the 2013 shootout came 3 months after police shot and killed two robbers in Santa Elena in another incident, and six weeks after robbers killed a security guard in San Ignacio.
This evening’s incident is the second in the town in two days after a robbery at Tropigas, and comes amid heightened scrutiny as robbers have struck across the country during Christmas season. This time, it was the owner of the establishment that reportedly fired the fatal shots at 21-year-old Zeldon Thompson, named as one of two accused robbers trying to hit the establishment.
