Things sweet for ‘Suga’ after charges dropped for allegedly stealing 43 laptops valued over $30K from Ministry of Education; Complainant didn’t show up to court

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former Government Warehouse Manager Ezbert Felix Ramclam Jr., better known as “Suga,” is no longer facing theft charges after the case against him was dismissed on Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

Ramclam Jr., 45, appeared unrepresented before the Senior Magistrate in Court #3 on Coney Drive, where his matter had been scheduled for trial. However, the virtual complainant failed to appear in court, resulting in the dismissal of the charge of theft and Ramclam Jr. being told he was free to go.

Ramclam had been charged on April 9, 2025 with a single count of theft. He was accused of dishonestly appropriating 43 Lenovo Chromebook laptops, valued at $787.50 each, for a total of $33,862.50, from a Government of Belize storage facility in Belize City between February 18 and February 28, 2025.

The allegations stemmed from a report made on March 29, 2025 by a Project Coordinator with the Ministry of Education’s Project Execution Unit. The Project Coordinator reported to the Crimes Investigation Branch that the laptops had been removed without authorization from a storage facility at the Government Book Store compound on Saint Joseph Street.

Police investigations led to the recovery of eight of the missing laptops in Orange Walk Town. According to investigators, a 59-year-old entrepreneur told police that a man known to him as “Suga,” who worked at the Government Book Store, had sold him nine Chromebooks in February 2025.

Ramclam was detained on April 7, 2025 and formally charged the following day.

Outside the courtroom on Monday, Ramclam maintained his innocence, telling reporters that police never had any evidence against him and that he was charged solely because someone mentioned his name during the investigation.

The theft charge had been hanging over Ramclam’s head for approximately one year, two months and six days. He had been out on bail of $3,000 plus one surety of the same amount, or two sureties of $1,500 each, pending the outcome of the matter.
