By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two men who admitted to setting a woman’s house on fire in southern Belize are now awaiting sentencing in the Dangriga High Court.
Thesus Mark Bailey and Evan Phillip Castillo appeared before Justice Antoinette Moore on Monday, July 14, 2025, where they pleaded guilty to a single count of arson. Sentencing has been deferred to a later date.
The incident occurred on September 21, 2022, around 6:30 p.m., when police responded to a report of a house fire in Silk Grass Village, Stann Creek District.
Following a year-long investigation, both men were detained in September 2023. According to police, Castillo told investigators he sent Bailey to burn the house because he believed the homeowner was responsible for his wife’s death. Bailey reportedly confirmed in a caution statement that he carried out the arson on Castillo’s instructions, saying he viewed Castillo’s wife as a mother figure.
The guilty pleas were formally accepted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, represented by Assistant DPP Javier Chan. Sentencing is pending.
