By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 41-year-old Sarteneja fisherman will be spending Easter behind bars after being sentenced to three months in prison for stealing $145 worth of items from a Belize City resident’s verandah.
Jose Augustine, a villager of Sarteneja, appeared on Thursday morning before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with theft.
The charge stemmed from an incident on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, on Southern Foreshore in Belize City, where Augustine was accused of dishonestly appropriating a green hose valued at $100, a hose head valued at $35, and a white bucket valued at $10.
Augustine pleaded guilty to the charge. In mitigation, he told the court that one of the men from the house owed him money and claimed he had only gone there to “collect what was due” after recently being released from prison.
However, the court noted that Augustine was no first-time offender. With nine previous convictions for crimes of dishonesty, Thursday’s matter marked his tenth conviction, leading the Chief Magistrate to impose an immediate custodial sentence of three months’ imprisonment.
According to the facts presented, the complainant told police that he had gone shopping at Westrac and returned home at about 3:15 p.m., when he was informed that a man had jumped onto his verandah and stole the items.
The owner reportedly went in search of the suspect and soon found Augustine still carrying the stolen property. He confronted him, identified the items as his own, detained him, and called 911 for police assistance.
When officers arrived, Augustine was taken into custody along with the recovered items, which the owner positively identified as those stolen from his verandah. Augustine was then escorted to the Queen Street Police Station, where he was formally charged with theft.
