The University of Belize has officially marked a historic milestone in national development with the successful launch of the University of Belize School of Medicine (UBSoM). One year since its opening, the School has seen its first cohort of medical students complete their first year of studies, positioning the institution as a leading force in advancing healthcare education in the country.
With its second intake of students set to begin on Monday, August 18, 2025, UBSoM is once again opening its doors to qualified, passionate Belizeans and regional applicants who aspire to pursue medicine. In preparation, the University is hosting the final sitting of its entrance and scholarship examination on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
The School is especially calling on applicants who have earned an Associate Degree in Biology or Biology and Chemistry to take advantage of this final opportunity to qualify for admission into the 2025/2026 academic year. Exceptional candidates may also be awarded academic scholarships, further expanding access to this prestigious program.
UBSoM was founded with the vision of transforming healthcare education by training a new generation of Belizean doctors who are competent, ethical, and community-oriented. The School offers a five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, grounded in an integrated, learner-centred curriculum that emphasizes early clinical exposure, reflective practice, and patient-centred care.
Courses are taught by a dedicated faculty of local and international medical professionals. The curriculum has been carefully designed to meet global standards and is aligned with the requirements of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
According to Dr. Lisa Johnson, Dean of the School of Medicine, the program is not just about producing doctors—it is about “producing the right kind of doctors: those who serve with skill, empathy, and leadership.”
How to Apply: Applications are being accepted via the University of Belize’s official website. Interested applicants should submit all required documents, including transcripts, personal statement, and proof of qualifications. Registration for the QESE closes soon.
