The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce

Noventa grados (90 Grados) shared that on Friday, August 1, 2025, the exhibition “The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce” opened at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art (MOA) in Provo, Utah (North Campus Drive). The exhibition runs through January 3, 2026.

Description (from BYU-MOA): “The sense of beauty, the aesthetic quality, is innate in every person and has found expression in various forms throughout history.” – Luis A. Ferré, Founder of the Museo de Arte de Ponce, 1964

Six hundred years of artistic beauty unfold in this stunning exhibition from Museo de Arte de Ponce. In The Sense of Beauty, we invite you to feast on inspiring works of religious devotion, bask in harmonious scenes of daily life, explore the wonders of the natural world around us, and marvel at the reverence with which painters depicted figures with mythological, historical, or personal significance.

Featuring unparalleled works by distinguished artists including Frederic, Lord Leighton, Peter Paul Rubens, El Greco, and many more, this exhibition will be a delight to everyone who appreciates the sense of beauty within all of us.

The Sense of Beauty has been organized by the Museo de Arte de Ponce in collaboration with the Brigham Young University Museum of Art.

Description (from the Museo de Arte de Ponce): In the early 1950s, Luis A. Ferré and his wife, Lorencita Ramírez de Arellano, conceived the project of founding an art museum for the enjoyment of their fellow citizens. Soon after, Ferré began to purchase works of art for the institution that he intended to establish in Ponce. In commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the museum’s founding in 1959, we are delighted to present The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce, a traveling exhibition that aims to highlight the three most representative areas in the museum’s collection with a selection of sixty paintings by European, Puerto Rican, and North American artists, starting February 23, 2025, at the Meadows Museum, SMU, in Dallas, Texas. The tour will continue at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, and the Cincinnati Art Museum.

This project coincides with the renovation of the Edward Durell Stone building galleries, which were affected by the 2020 earthquakes, and reaffirms the institution’s commitment to providing access to its collection.
