By Aaron Humes: Following a major power interruption starting just before noon on Thursday, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) announced that at 5:43 Thursday evening the West Lake Gas Turbine was brought online to support the national grid.

While some load shedding was subsequently announced for parts of the country, the turbine is being operated at 50 percent capacity as tests continue.

Once fully commissioned, the upgraded turbine will add 30 megawatts of capacity to the existing 95 megawatts of in-country generation.

BEL has announced no further load-shedding schedule should Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) decide to cut power to Belize again if they have issues. Representatives of the companies are to meet in Cancun along with Prime Minister John Briceño in the coming days.
