The Nature Conservancy Belize and partners meet with Peten producers to promote sustainable and forest-friendly livestock production

By Zoila Palma: Belizean livestock stakeholders are strengthening efforts to promote sustainable and forest-friendly livestock production through a regional collaboration in the Selva Maya, one of Mesoamerica’s most important forest landscapes.

Livestock production remains a cornerstone of rural livelihoods and Belize’s agricultural economy, particularly in areas that overlap with high-conservation-value ecosystems. However, the sector faces growing challenges, including agricultural expansion, soil degradation, pressure on forests, and increasing climate vulnerability.

To address these concerns, representatives from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Belize and national partners participated in a regional exchange and training program in Petén, Guatemala, from May 27 to 29.

The initiative focused on strengthening sustainable livestock practices through practical training modules and hands-on learning opportunities designed to improve productivity while reducing environmental impacts.

The exchange brought together livestock producers, associations, conservation organizations, and academic institutions from across the Selva Maya region.

Belize was represented by the Belize Maya Forest Trust (BMFT), the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA), the Forest Department, and local livestock producers. Participants shared experiences and explored successful approaches already being implemented in Guatemala to enhance livestock production while supporting conservation goals.

Field visits to ranches in Petén showcased regenerative livestock systems, including silvopastoral and intensive silvopastoral models that integrate trees within grazing areas.

These practices help improve soil health, protect water resources, and reduce pressure on forest ecosystems.

This exchange reflects growing momentum across Belize and neighboring countries to scale up livestock systems that are both economically viable and environmentally sustainable, supporting rural livelihoods while safeguarding the forests and natural resources of the Selva Maya.
