Palma visited the historic Panama Canal, one of the world’s most important trade routes.
Palma described the experience of seeing ships traverse the canal as “a powerful reminder of our interconnected histories and the vital role our region plays in global affairs.”
The canal, a symbol of both historical struggle and modern global commerce, offers visitors unique insights into the geopolitical importance of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, drastically reducing maritime travel time between the two oceans—from about 22,000 km around South America’s Cape Horn to roughly 8,000 km through the canal. Its construction was considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century.
During the course of Proyecto Revisa, journalists engaged in workshops on data analysis, cybersecurity, and fact-checking, tools considered essential for safeguarding press freedom and democratic transparency in the digital age.
Reflecting on the program, Palma expressed gratitude to the organizers for an inspiring week. “It was an enriching opportunity to learn alongside colleagues from across the region and to reaffirm the responsibility we share as journalists to deliver accurate, transparent, and impactful reporting,” she said.
